Tip #20: Start Conversations Early | 28 Days of Salary Negotiation

Are you the one of every two people who has never brought up the prospect of a raise during a performance review? Are you shocked to learn that nearly one out of every two people has never brought up a salary increase during a performance review? According to a survey by Salary.com, fear is the main driver that keeps people from productively discussing salary with their employer, and negotiating for a raise. 

One way to combat this is to get ahead of your peers with regard to when the conversations may be happening. For those that do attempt to negotiate a raise, the vast majority are doing so during a performance evaluation. 

Consider starting this conversation (remember - negotiation can be a long conversation!) about 4-5 months before performance evaluation season. This way you are not one of a crowd of people asking for a raise at the same time. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to discuss areas where you can focus you attention in terms of outcomes and skills gathered. By the time performance evaluations roll around, you will be positioned to describe successes on exactly those metrics you were told to focus upon.
